Victim or Victor

A young lady was sulking and complaining that she had gotten looked over for the promotion that went to another co-worker.

“Either you choose to be a victim or victor. ”

That distinct but straightforward voice of her manager probably felt like cold ice in the ears of the young lady sitting in the corner office cubicle.

What made the young lady bitter is because she had been working at the company for two-years and the co-worker who had received the promotion had only worked at the company for less than a year.

“You know I am good! ” said the young lady, as she began slamming her files on top of the desk.

Her manager sat by quietly, allowing the young lady to vent and go through her temper tantrum.

“That’s why I’m quitting,” threatened the young lady. And I will not be coming back! ”

There continued to be no response from her manager. Not one word utter.

“How could you do this to me? ” demanded the young lady. “If it wasn’t for my hard work you wouldn’t be where you are today. I thought you would look out for me. But I see that you are all for you. ”

The manager did not flinch at the young lady’s emotional accusations.

“Again, I ask you,” mumbled her manager. “Who do you choose to be? A victim or victor. ”

Suddenly, the co-worker who had gotten the promotion appeared at the doorway of the cubicle.

The young lady and manager both turned toward the newly promoted co-worker.

“Is there something I can do for you? ” asked the manager.

For a second, there was silence.

Then the newly promoted co-worker, nervously spoke up.

“Ugh, I just want you to know that I completed all my work and will be taking a few files home with me to night. So, if you don’t need me for anything else…then I will be leaving now.”

The manager got up and took the arm of the newly promoted co-worker.

As the manager led the co-worker out the door, she turned and spoke to the young lady for a final time.

“So, are you going to stay here or leave?

The young lady just sat there pouting.

The manager then turned back around and led the newly promoted blind co-worker to the elevator.
