Vanity of vanities, saith the Preacher, vanity of vanities; all is vanity. Ecclesiastes 1
Let me simply say that this whole boycotting the Oscars is nothing more than a sham.
These actors of color need to step back and smell the coffee.
Here we are in the midst of so many major problems in the black community that to put emphasis on a piece of molded metal that is dipped in 24k gold and has no value except to the winner is not and should never be a priority at this time for the majority of black people.
If these actors are so incense about the unjust practice of the Oscar process and had the knowledge of this fact for years, then the question begs to be asked.
Why didn’t they put together a coalition and address this situation head on within their own Hollywood community?
As I watched the video of Janet Hubert (former co-star on the Fresh Prince) response to Jada Pinkett-Wilson, she stated her position very clear. Despite the fact that there is no love lost between her and Will Smith, you do have to give the woman her due for stating a truth that some wanted to express but haven’t.
Will and Jada Smith have been touted as a “power couple” in Hollywood and are friends with many influential actors (e.g., Tom Cruise) and power brokers, and with these relationships, you mean to tell me that they never addressed their concerns about blacks not getting their fair share in Hollywood?
And if this is then the case, you have to ask yourself the question. Why now ask people to boycott the Oscars? Is it because Will didn’t get another nod for his performance as he did with the Golden Globes?
Look, I am the first person to want the best for black folks but, as James Brown put it, “I don’t want nobody to give me nothing…open up the door, I’ll get it myself.”
The Oscars should be the very least of black folks problems, especially when people are dealing with the water crisis in Flint Michigan, shootings in Chicago, police brutality, high unemployment, quality education, housing issues, voting rights and the high percentage of young black males continual incarceration.
All this boycotting the Oscars and wanting black folks to fall in line is disgraceful and they should not expect for people of color to follow blindly with folks who could have made a change but they didn’t.
One can be assured that once the Oscars Awards is off the air the ranting from some of these same actors will be silent and it will be back to Hollywood business as usual.
