Don’t Ban The Lamb

I hadn’t thought about children rhymes in a very long time. But a friend at church who also is a co-teacher in our Children’s Sunday School handed me a copy of the nursery rhyme Mary Had A Little Lamb.

Along with the poem she gave me a couple of pages with one version of the history of this well-known children’s nursery rhyme.

When I read the story about how this simple child’s poem came about, there also seem to be considerable disagreement as to who actually was the original author, Sarah Josepha Hale or John Roulstone.

The poem, however simplistic was brought to life with music by Lowell Mason.

After taking the time to read Mary Had A Little Lamb and singing and humming the song to myself, I realized that this poem is prophetic based on what Christian students are dealing with today in our public schools.

Here is the famous Mary Had A Little Lamb poem:

Mary had a little lamb,
His fleece was white as snow,
And everywhere that Mary went,
The lamb was sure to go.

He followed her to school one day,
Which was against the rule,
It made the children laugh and play
To see a lamb at school.

And so the teacher turned it out,
But still it lingered near,
And waited patiently about,
Till Mary did appear.

“Why does the lamb love Mary so?”
The eager children cry.
“Why, Mary loves the lamb, you know.”
The teacher did reply.

If you will just use your imagination and examine the Lamb, you will notice that He brings Mary comfort, protection and joy. Now, it appears that He doesn’t want Mary to go anywhere without Him. So he stays with Mary. And everywhere Mary goes He is sure to go. He even follows her to school which is against the rule. He will even make the other school children laugh and play to see Him at school.

This rhyme truly fits into what Christians are going through today, right here in America. The name of Jesus and the word Christmas seem to get more children expelled than ever before. And with school having already started, we might be more concern about the spiritual health of our children before sending them off to school.

One thing Christian parents shouldn’t do is don’t ban the Lamb.In or out of school. Pray with and for your child everyday.

Just ask yourself this question. Wouldn’t it be wonderful to see the Lamb accepted in school? The Lamb of God.

The next day John seeth Jesus coming unto him, and saith, Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world.   John 1:29
