Online Business and Politics

Online business and politics don’t mix well.

When Facebook Founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg and senior staff members of his team held a meeting last week with a group of Conservatives to discuss the allegation that Trending Topics on Facebook are often intentionally sidelined over liberal interest. I shrugged my shoulders and gave it not a second thought. Figuring this is today’s nature of online business and politics.

Then the unexpected happened to me.

A few days after that story ran, I was collaborating on a new business venture and decided to outsource one of our projects to an online service who stated and it was verified that they could accomplish the job in the time we needed it.

Once we made the payment, we awaited the end results. But, within an hour, we were sent an email from the service provider declining our business offer and our payment was returned back into our account.

Now, I was indeed taken-aback as to what made this business owner turn us down. It wasn’t hard to figure out.

This business owner was basing their decisions on politics. Can you believe this?

It appeared that the project didn’t fit their political ideology and therefore. This business owner was not going to service our request.

Okay, I get it. And having been in business for many years, I myself understand that there will be times when you are met with deciding if you want to do business with someone you like or dislike…but here is the crust of online business 101.

First, when the business is in its planning stage, the owner or owners need to consider and determine if they will be providing their services or products to the entire public or only to a specific demographics.

Second, if there are certain requirements that the business owner or company expects from their buyer that should also be clearly outlined.

Third, is the business about making a profit or will it be a non-profit?

Or in the business to be a hobby or successful?

Or to operate purely along political, religious, ethnic, racial and gender lines.

Needless to state, the business owner who declined to do business with us will not have to worry about us returning or recommending their services to others.

For me and my business colleagues, this was another teachable moment that we learned doing this unpredictable election season.

This past weekend at our Sunday Service the guest pastor said something that resonated with me deeply concerning the way in which we will do business going forth.

And here it is straight and plain.

We will not follow the donkey, nor the elephant but the Lamb!
